(WCC Tournament Semi-Final)

Saturday’s game was the third match-up of the season between the Cyclones and Chargers.  The Cyclones had won the previous two contests by 9 and 17.  Beating a good team 3 times in one season is hard to do, but the Cyclones were up to the task on Saturday at JustAGame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells.

The Cyclones got contributions from 7 players in the opening half, and headed to the lockerroom with a 34-29 lead.  UW-Fox struggled on offense in the opening half, but held the Chargers to 1/13 shooting from three-point range.

In the second half UW-Fox got key contributions from two of their first year players in earning the victory.  Guard Chase Hawley knocked down 2 three-point field goal attempts, and post player Nick Mohl scored 8 points.  Hawley’s last 3 with just under 6 minutes remaining put momentum back in the hands of the Cyclones.

Trevor Krizenesky led the Cyclones with 17 points and 5 assists, while Mohl added 10 rebounds to go with his 8 points.  Marcus Jensen also contributed 7 rebounds and 7 points for UW-Fox, which got 5 or more points from nine different players.

With the win UW-Fox moves to 23-4 overall on the season, and they earn a spot in the WCC Tournament Championship game for the 4th time in 5 seasons under head coach Lee Rabas.  They will play UW-Richland, 98-93 winners over UW-Manitowoc in the other semi-final on Saturday, at 2pm on Sunday at JustAGame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells.

UW-Richland was the only road team to pick up a victory in WCC tournament quarter-final action on Wednesday night.  The Roadrunners clawed back from an 18 point 2nd half deficit to force overtime and earn the victory.

The four remaining teams will travel to Wisconsin Dells on Saturday February 22nd for semi-final games, which will be played at JustAGame Fieldhouse.  The tournament concludes with the championship game at 2pm on Sunday February 23rd at JustAGame.

Cyclones Advance To WCC Tournament Semi-Final

The UW-Fox men’s basketball team got key contributions from Jon Schlaver (Fox Valley Lutheran HS) and Sam Schreiber (Appleton East HS) in posting a 71-48 WCC tournament victory over UW-Waukesha on Wednesday night at UW-Fox.  Schlaver scored 16 points on 8/9 shooting in his first extended action since suffering a concussion two weeks ago. 

Schreiber scored the first 6 Cyclone points on his way to a career night that saw him finish with 14 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals on 6/9 shooting with no turnovers.  He also guarded Cougars leading scorer Brandon St. George for a good portion of the game helping UW-Fox hold him to just 8 points.  

Trevor Krizenesky (Brillion HS) also chipped in with 13 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals in his final home game as a Cyclone.  His three-point field goal midway through the second half stopped a 5-0 Cougar run and helped push the lead back to 15 points. 

The Cyclones led from start to finish, and despite shooting 0/12 from three-point range, found themselves up 34-20 at the half.  UW-Fox was extremely efficient on offense in the second half connecting on 16/24 (66.7%) field goal attempts, and 8 of 11 (72%) free-throws.

UW-Fox moves to 22-4 overall on the season.  They will travel to Wisconsin Dells on Saturday February 22nd for the WCC tournament final four, which is being hosted at JustAGame Fieldhouse.  It is the Cyclones 5th trip to the tournament semi-finals in 5 years. Other WCC men’s teams posting victories tonight were UW-Manitowoc, UW-Barron, and UW-Richland.

Cyclones To Host UW-Waukesha

The UW-Fox men's basketball team will host the UW-Waukesha Cougars on Wednesday night February 19th at 7pm.  It is a quarterfinal match-up in the 2014 Wisconsin Collegiate Conference tournament.

The Cougars (12-10, 6-6) and Cyclones (21-4, 10-2) split during the regular season.  UW-Fox beat the Cougars on November 15, 2013 at home 89-81.  UW-Waukesha returned the favor on January 27th when they defeated the visiting Cyclones 70-63.

The Cougars are led by first year head coach Adam Ligocki who was a stand out performer for the men's basketball team at then Carroll College from 2003-2007.  UW-Fox head coach Lee Rabas was an assistant coach at Lawrence University from 2004-2009.  Lawrence and Carroll were two of the top performing Midwest Conference (NCAA Division III) men's basketball programs during that time.

Cyclones Roll In Tournament Opener

The UW-Fox men’s basketball team jumped out to a 46-21 halftime lead on their way to an 87-50 win over visiting UW-Fond du Lac.  It was a first round game in the 2014 Wisconsin Collegiate Conference (WCC) tournament.   

Trevor Krizenesky and Riley Van Asten had late first half baskets to give the Cyclones momentum going into the half.  Krizenesky scored on a runner down the left baseline, and Van Asten converted a steal into a lay-up as the half ended.  

Krizenesky and Cameron Schaefer paced UW-Fox in the opening half.  Both were in double figures and combined to go 6/10 from three-point range.  Matt Lehner, Wesley Krauss, and Marcus Jensen were also part of a 14-4 run that helped the Cyclones to a 38-18 lead with 3:05 remaining in the half.  UW-Fox held the Falcons to 29% (8/27) field goal shooting in the opening half, just 2/12 (17%) on three-point field goals.

In the second half UW-Fox was able to push the lead and maintain it over 30 points throughout.  13 Cyclones scored led by Krizenesky and Schaefer who had 20 and 19 points respectively as well as 5 assists each.  Lehner rounded out the double digit scorers with 11 points.  Jensen pulled down 8 rebounds, 5 offensive, to lead UW-Fox, while Van Asten and Chase Hawley each had 3 steals.

The win boosts the Cyclones overall record to 21-4.  UW-Fox will host a WCC tournament quarterfinal game on Wednesday February 19th at 7pm.  Their opponent will be UW-Waukesha or UW-Sheboygan.

Cyclones Outlast UW-Washington

In a game that saw big point swings the Cyclones were able to make shots at the end of the game when they needed them.  Trevor Krizenesky’s sixth 3-point field goal of the night came from the left corner with 1:41 remaining in the game to push UW-Fox out to a 5 point lead.  From there the Cyclones were able to make free-throws to seal the win.

UW-Fox jumped out to a 17-2 lead to start the game.  However, a Cyclone defensive breakdown led to an old-fashioned three point play by Jon Lardy, which made the score 17-5 and seemed to settle the host Wildcats down.  From their UW-Washington would pull themselves back into the game and trail just 32-34 at the half.

Things didn’t get better for the Cyclones to start the second half.  Poor shooting, lapses on defense, and the play of Huskies first year player Evan Rathke led to a 34-42 deficit early in the second half.  

Trailing 45-51 with 10:24 remaining Krizenesky started to take over.  He would knock down 3 three-point field goals over the next several possessions, the last one, with just under 6 minutes to play, would give the Cyclones a 58-57 lead.

Matt Lehner, Chase Hawley, and Cameron Schaefer would also come up big down the stretch for UW-Fox.  Lehner knocked down two mid range jump shots in the last 5 minutes of the game to keep the Cyclones in the lead, while a cutting Schafer would score off a nifty pass from Hawley who himself would score on a reverse lay-up a minute later.  

Krizenesky finished with a career high 32 points, while Lehner chipped in with 11.  Schafer added 8 points, and Hawley 4 assists to lead UW-Fox.

UW-Fox finishes the season 20-4 overall, 10-2 in the WCC-East.  It is the fifth consecutive 20 win regular season, and 10 win WCC-East season for the Cyclones.  UW-Fox owns a 52-8 conference record over the past 5 seasons.

The Cyclones open WCC tournament play on Saturday February 15th when they host UW-Fond du Lac in a first round game.  Tip-off is set for 1pm at UW-Fox.

UW-Fox Wins On Sophomore Night

The Cyclones honored 10 second year players before the game, the final regular season home game for UW-Fox.  13 players scored for UW-Fox led by Trevor Krizenesky and Matt Lehner.  Both players finished with 15 points.  Krizenesky also added 4 assists.

UW-Fox led 30-21 at intermission and slowly pulled away in the second half.  Chase Hawley penetrated and found Krizenesky open for a three-point field goal that pushed the lead to 50-30 with just over 7 minutes to play.  Wesley Krauss scored 5 points during the decisive run.

The Cyclones defense held the Buccaneers to 27.6% field goal shooting for the game.  UW-Fox connected on 45% of their shots in the second half.

With the win UW-Fox moves to 19-4 overall, 9-2 in the WCC-East.  They travel to UW-Washington on Monday night February 10th for their regular season finally against the Wildcats.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7pm. 

Cyclones Get Key Road Victory

The UW-Fox Men’s Basketball team avenged an earlier season loss with a 72-63 road win over UW-Manitowoc.  The Blue Devils (17-4, 11-1) had wrapped up the WCC-East title on Monday night, which ended the Cyclones 3 year hold on the regular season conference crown.  However, with the win the Cyclones secure second place and move to 18-4 overall, 8-2 in the WCC-East.

Trevor Krizenesky scored 29 points to lead the Cyclones, while Cameron Schaefer chipped in with 12 points.  The two combined to shoot 15/26 for the game.  Marcus Jensen also scored 8 points and Nick Mohl grabbed 8 rebounds for UW-Fox.

Krizenesky scored 5 straight points to close out the first half and help the Cyclones to a 32-26 halftime lead.  UW-Manitowoc has been a big second half team this season, but the Cyclones picked up where they left off and pushed the lead to 45-30 on a Krizenesky drive with 13:41 remaining.

The Blue Devils cut the lead to single digits on several different occasions, but each time UW-Fox was up to the challenge.  The Cyclones hit 10 of their 14 free-throws in the second half to seal the victory.

UW-Fox wraps up their home schedule this Friday February 7th when they host UW-Marinette at 7:30pm.  The Cyclone men’s basketball program will say good-bye to 10 fabulous second year players.  UW-Fox closes out the regular season with a WCC-East road game at UW-Washington on Monday February 10th.
