Cyclones Fall To Blue Devils

UW-Manitowoc 93 at UW-Fox 88

For the first time since 2008-2009 the Cyclones lost a WCC-East home game on Monday night.  The Cyclones were defeated by UW-Manitowoc 88-93.  With the win the Blue Devils (10-0, 6-0) stay undefeated in the WCC-East and overall, while the Cyclones fall to 8-3 overall, 5-1 in the WCC-East.

The Cyclones allowed the Blue Devils to shoot over 57% for the game, and only made 14 of their 29 free-throws, including 3 missed front ends of bonus free-throws.  It was an uncharacteristic defensive performance for UW-Fox who had four players score in double figures led by Sam Schreiber and Chase Hawley.  The two had 21 and 20 points respectively.  Jon Schlaver also had 14 points and Trevor Krizenesky 13 for UW-Fox.

UW-Manitowoc was led by Xavier Fletcher who scored 20 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, and blocked 3 shots.  Olentda Bryant almost had a triple double for the Blue Devils with 14 points, 9 rebounds, and 8 assists.

The Cyclones return to action on Wednesday night.  They host Fox Valley Technical College in a non-conference game.  Tip-off is set for 7:30pm.

Big Second Half Lifts UW-Fox

UW-Fox 91 UW-Rock 72

The UW-Fox men’s basketball team defeated UW-Rock 91-72 to pick up the non-conference home victory.  The Cyclones quickly erased a 42-44 halftime deficit with a 12-4 run to start the second half.  Cameron Schaefer started the rally with 2 free-throws and Sam Schreiber capped it off by knocking down one of his 2 three-point field goals.

Jon Schlaver scored 12 first half points to pace the Cyclones early.  He got help from reserve Nathan TeGrootenhuis who knocked down both of his shots for 5 points, and grabbed 4 first half rebounds.  The Cyclones nemesis was rebounding in the opening half.  UW-Rock converted 5 offensive rebounds into 10 points.

First year player Chase Hawley had a career high 12 points off the bench for UW-Fox.  His steals and deflections on defense were converted into transition lay-ups, which helped push the Cyclone lead into double digits.  Joe Perez also scored 7 second half points as he connected on all three of his field goal attempts.

For the game Schlaver led UW-Fox with 16 points and 5 rebounds.  Schaefer and Schreiber also finished with 12 points apiece.  Schaefer also recorded 3 assists and 4 steals.

UW-Fox shot 62% in the win and converted 20/29 free-throw attempts.  They also forced the Rattlers into 25 turnovers for the game.

UW-Fox Dominates Falcons

The UW-Fox men were dominant defensively in recording a 75-22 lop-sided road victory over UW-Fond du Lac on Wednesday night.  The Cyclones forced 28 Falcon turnovers and held them to just 14% field goal shooting for the game.  The margin of victory was the largest for UW-Fox since head coach Lee Rabas took over the Cyclone program in 2009-2010.

The Cyclones had 14 players score in the win.  Sam Schreiber led UW-Fox with 11 points and 7 rebounds, while Jon Schlaver scored 10 points and grabbed 9 rebounds.  UW-Fox recorded a season high 56 total rebounds.

Home Win Streak Ends

For the first time since the 2009-2010 season the UW-Fox men experienced a loss in the UW-Fox Fieldhouse.  The Cyclones home win streak ends at 51 or 52 games (there last loss was a decision to Fox Valley Technical College in which they were the visitor - FVTC does not have a gym, but has a basketball team).  UW-Fox had won all their home games during the 2010-2011, 2011-2012, and 2012-2013 seasons.

The Cyclones jumped out to a 35-25 halftime lead, but were outscored decisively (16-34) in the second half by the visiting Lakeland College varsity reserve squad en route to the 51-59 loss.  Stan Mckenzie scored 19 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the Muskies to victory.  He  also dominated defensively in the second half recording 3 steals and forcing numerous Cyclone turnovers.

UW-Fox shot just 9% for the game on three-point field goals, and only 32% overall.  Trevor Krizenesky led the Cyclones with 13 points.  He was the only UW-Fox player in double figures.

The loss drops UW-Fox to 5-2 overall.  They will return to action on December 2nd when they host UW-Marshfield.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30pm.

UW-Fox Posts WCC-East Road Win

The UW-Fox men’s basketball team defeated UW-Marinette 66-52 in WCC-East play on Monday night.  It was the Cyclones first win in Marinette since 2011 when their 79-68 win clinched the first of three WCC-East championships.  UW-Fox had lost their last two games in Marinette by a combined 7 points.

The Cyclones jumped out to a 38-29 lead as Jon Schlaver and Cameron Schaefer combined to score 24 first half points.  It also received quality play off the bench from freshmen Wesley Krauss and Seth Wallace.  Wallace scored 4 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 5 minutes of work.

In the second half the Cyclones could never quite put the Buccaneers away due mostly to their own offensive woes.  However, back to back lay-ups by Trevor Krizenesky, and a Chase Hawley basket in the final 4 minutes sealed the UW-Fox victory.

Krizenesky led the Cyclones with 16 points, while Schaefer and Schlaver finished with 15 and 13 respectively.  Krizenesky also led the Cyclones with 8 rebounds, while Schlaver and Schaefer each pulled down 6.

After a 48 foul and 54 free-throw game on Saturday, the two teams combined for just 15 free-throws and 21 fouls.  UW-Fox held the Buccaneers to 37% shooting for the game, despite allowing them to knock down 7 of their 14 three-point attempts.  The Cyclones also forced 16 UW-Marinette turnovers.

With the win UW-Fox moves to 5-1 overall, 4-0 in the WCC-East.  They will return to action on Saturday when they host the Lakeland College JV team.  Tip-off is set for 2pm in the UW-Fox Fieldhouse.  The Cyclones have not played an NCAA DIII opponent in over ten years.

UW-Fox Win Streak Ends

Playing on the court where they captured the 2013 WCC tournament championship in convincing fashion, the UW-Fox men’s basketball team fell to UW-Marathon 62-67 in a non-conference basketball game on Saturday afternoon in Wausau.  With the loss the Cyclones 21 game winning streak, dating back to last December, came to an end.

The Cyclones were their own worst enemy against the Huskies.  UW-Fox shot just 33% for the game, missed lay-ups, missed free-throws, had careless turnovers at critical moments, and gave up 24 offensive rebounds.  The Cyclones forced 19 Husky turnovers and held them to just 2/14 shooting (14%) from 3-point range.  It was the Cyclones worst performance since a loss in late November of 2012 at UW-Marshfield.

The lone bright spot for UW-Fox was the play of 2nd year guard Cameron Schaefer.  The Sheboygan North grad almost single-handedly willed the Cyclones to victory with his performance.  He scored 23 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, recorded 4 assists, 4 steals, and 12 deflections.

Schaefer’s defense early in the second half was the catalyst that helped UW-Fox turn a 30-34 halftime deficit into a 44-40 lead with 13:32 remaining.  From there the game would seesaw back and forth.  The Cyclones led 53-52 with 4:27 left in the game, but their inability to score near the basket, and make free-throws, proved costly over the last 6 minutes of the game.

The loss drops the Cyclones to 4-1 overall on the season.  They will return to action on Monday night when they travel to UW-Marinette for a WCC-East game with the Buccaneers.  Tip-off is set for 7:30pm.

Cyclone Win Is Number 200 For Rabas

UW-Fox defeated UW-Waukesha 89-81 on Wednesday night in a hard fought game between the WCC-East rivals.  The two programs have combined to win the last 4 WCC tournament championships.  The teams combined for just 17 turnovers, and each shot over 50%, in a clean and competitive junior college basketball game.

The Cougars used a 5-0 run in the last minute of the half to close a double digit UW-Fox lead to 43-35.  Cameron Schaefer and Sam Schreiber led the Cyclones in the opening half with 14 and 10 points respectively.

In the second half UW-Fox quickly pushed the lead to double digits behind some inspired post play from Jon Schlaver.  The 6-8 center scored 10 points in the opening minutes of the half, but was forced to spend much of the half on the bench with foul trouble before fouling out with just under 6 minutes to play.

UW-Waukesha fought their way back on the strength of post player Traivione Hills and guard Brandon St. George.  The two were nearly unstoppable in stretches of the second half.  A three point basket by St. George pushed the Cougars to a 69-63 lead with just under 10 minutes remaining in the game.

Schaefer's deep three-point field goal from the right corner off a Trevor Krizenesky assist ignited a UW-Fox rally that would see the Cyclones take the lead for good a few minutes later on a Krizenesky free-throw.  On the very next possession Schaefer turned a steal into an easy bucket to push the Cyclones out to a 3 point lead.

Freshmen Marcus Jensen and Nick Mohl would come up huge in the last 4 minutes for the Cyclones.  Mohl caught a Krizenesky pass in transition and converted an old-fashioned 3 point play before nailing a jumper at the end of the shot clock a minute later.  Jensen grabbed 3 late defensive rebounds and had a 3 point play of his own off an offensive rebound.  Krizenesky sealed the game with a deep three with :18 seconds left that gave UW-Fox an 87-81 lead.

Hills finished with 21 points and St. George with 19 to lead the Cougars.  Schaefer had 21 points and Krizenesky 20 to lead UW-Fox.  Schreiber finished with 15 points and Schlaver 14 to aid the Cyclone attack.  Jensen grabbed 8 rebounds.

The win was number 200 for UW-Fox head coach Lee Rabas.  He previously was 103-56 in 7 seasons as the head boys basketball coach at Xavier High School.  His career record currently stands at 200-69 as a head coach.

With the win the Cyclones move to 4-0 (3-0) on the season.  The Cyclones will travel to Wausau on Saturday for a non-conference game with WCC-West power UW-Marathon.  Tip-off is set for 3pm.

UW-Fox Outlasts UW-Washington

The UW-Fox men’s basketball team recorded a 75-57 victory over UW-Washington on Monday night in a WCC-East match-up.  The Cyclones labored offensively for most of the first half in a game that was their home opener.

Seth Wallace came off the bench to hit a 3-point field goal from the deep left corner that gave the Cyclones a 19-16 lead.  It was a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the game.  Wallace sparked the Cyclones off the bench in the opening half by scoring 6 points and grabbing 3 offensive rebounds to help UW-Fox to a 33-25 halftime lead.  UW-Fox shot a season low 26% from three-point range in the opening half.

Trevor Krizenesky initiated an early second half run with his tenacious on ball defense.  The Cyclones used some early Wildcat turnovers to quickly push the lead to double digits and would maintain that lead throughout the second half.  UW-Fox also improved its ball movement in the second half against the Wildcats pesky zone defense, and that allowed the Cyclones to shoot 52% in the second half, compared to just 30% in the first half.

Krizenesky led the Cyclones with 20 points and Cameron Schaefer chipped in with 17.  Sam Schreiber recorded 9 points and 5 rebounds for the Cyclones, while Wallace also finished with 9 points and 5 rebounds off the bench.

With the win UW-Fox moves to 3-0 (2-0) on the season.  They return to action on Wednesday night when they host WCC-East rival UW-Waukesha at 7:30pm.  The Cougars are led by first year coach Adam Ligocki.

Cyclones Earn Another Road Victory

The UW-Fox men’s basketball team earned a 79-50 non-conference road victory over UW-Richland on Friday night.  Leading 40-27 at half-time the Cyclones would not allow the Road Runners to get any closer.

In the opening half UW-Fox made 6 of their 13 three-point field goal attempts, good for 46%.  Trevor Krizenesky and Chase Hawley paced the Cyclones in the first half with 10 and 8 points respectively.

For the game the Cyclones held UW-Richland to just 33% (20/61) shooting from the field and just 20% (3/15) on three-point field goals.  They also forced 18 second half Road Runner turnovers, 28 total for the game.

UW-Fox shot over 48% (29/60) for the game.  The Cyclones had seven players score 6 or more points, three in double figures.  Krizenesky led the way with 14 points and 5 assists, while Hawley and Jon Schlaver finished with 11 points.

The Cyclones are now 2-0 overall on the young season.  They will return to action on Monday November 11th when they host UW-Washington in a WCC-East game at 7pm.

UW-Fox Opens With Road Win

The UW-Fox men’s basketball team opened the 2013-2014 campaign with a 66-29 road victory over UW-Sheboygan.  The game was the season and conference opener for the Cyclones who start the season off 1-0 overall and in the WCC-East.

Jon Schlaver’s 3-point play with 7:28 left in the first half gave UW-Fox a 27-9 lead.  However, the Wombats outscored the Cyclones 12-8 over the next 7 minutes to make the halftime score 35-21.  The Cyclones struggled finishing around the basket in the opening half, which saw Schlaver make all of his field goal attempts to pace the Cyclones with 9 points.

In the second half the Cyclones slowly pulled away.  Although their struggles continued on offense, they were able to hold UW-Sheboygan to 8 second half points and 24% field goal shooting for the game.

Trevor Krizenesky’s back to back baskets with just over 6 minutes remaining pushed the Cyclone lead to 53-27.  Krizenesky paced the Cyclones with 19 points.  Seth Wallace hit a three-point field goal to give UW-Fox their biggest lead at 61-27.

Cameron Schaefer finished with 13 points, while Schlaver added 7 rebounds.  Chase Hawley recorded 2 charges taken, and the Cyclones outrebounded the Wombats 46-37.

UW-Fox travels to UW-Richland for a non-conference game on Friday night.  Tip-off against the Road Runners is set for 7:30pm.

2013-2014 UW-Fox Men's Basketball Season Outlook

The UW-Fox men’s basketball team begins the 2013-14 season as the reigning Wisconsin Collegiate Conference (WCC) champions.  The Cyclones defeated UW-Manitowoc 79-49 to win the 2013 WCC tournament title.  They finished the 2012-13 season with a 23-3 record, including a 17-game winning streak after starting the season 6-3.

Along with the tournament championship the UW-Fox men won their third straight WCC-East conference title.  The Cyclone men have posted a 42-6 WCC-East record over the past four seasons.  UW-Fox also won the 2011 WCC tournament championship when they posted a 26-1 overall record.

The Cyclone men will have to replace several key contributors from the 2012-13 season including starters Trevor Smith, Jordan Kaufman, and Jon Braeger.  Braeger was the Cyclones leading scorer in 2012-13 and was named the WCC-East player of the year.  Kaufman was a dynamic defensive player and capable scorer whose competitiveness will be hard to replace.    Smith was the team’s leader in 2012-13 and a fantastic team player who recorded a 45-6 overall record during his two seasons with the Cyclones.  He was named honorable mention all-conference for his efforts in 2012-13, and is currently a practice player for Division 1 Campbell University in North Carolina.

Also departed is key reserve DJ Rhodes.  Rhodes joined the Cyclones midway through the season and gave the Cyclones a huge boost on the offensive end with his ability to shoot, score, and create offense for others.  He also possessed a high basketball IQ and was a dependable late game free-throw shooter.

Despite the key losses UW-Fox returns the most second year players since head coach Lee Rabas took over the program in 2009-2010.  Leading the way is the backcourt tandem of Trevor Krizenesky and Cameron Schaefer.  Krizenesky led the Cyclones in minutes played and assists.  He also was their 3rd leading scorer at almost 12 ppg.  Schaefer gave UW-Fox a capable defender and rebounder.  His ability to come up with hustle plays was key to their 2012-2013 success.  He and Krizenesky will be called upon to provide defense and leadership to the 2013-2014 squad.

Sam Schreiber, Matt Lehner, and Joe Perez also return to the UW-Fox line-up.  Schreiber started all but one game a season ago.  Because of added depth up front he will be able to play his more natural position as a wing player.  His athleticism and potential as a defender and rebounder will be key to the Cyclones in 2013-14.  Lehner came off the bench last season and led UW-Fox in offensive rebounds and free-throw shooting percentage.  Perez provides the Cyclones with solid defense and a mature presence on the floor.

Other returners include Matt Wojtowicz, Eric Vandehey, Lawsen Swick, and Jon Schlaver.  Wojtowicz, Vandehey, and Swick provide solid depth and intangibles coming off the bench.  Schlaver joined UW-Fox after their 6-3 start and was a key contributor off the bench as they put together their 17-game winning streak to end the season.

UW-Fox also welcomes newcomers Wesley Krauss (Manawa), Chase Hawley (Little Chute), Riley Van Asten (Shiocton), Nick Mohl (Menasha), Brett Stoeger (Hortonville), Seth Wallace (Menasha St. Mary’s Central), Marcus Jensen (Amherst), Tanner Vander Zanden (Kimberly), Nathan Tegrootenhuis (Winneconne), and Devonte Pointer (Oneida Nation).  All ten will provide needed depth and competitiveness to a UW-Fox program that will have to overcome its lack of size and athleticism if it wants to continue its recent success in the Wisconsin Collegiate Conference.

2 Games Added To 2013-2014 Schedule

The Lakeland College men's basketball program finished the 2012-2013 season with a 22-6 record, and is one of the top programs in the NACC.  UW-Barron made the WCC Tournament semi-finals last season where they were defeated by the Cyclones 82-79.

UW-Fox Men Win WCC Tournament Title

(Wausau) The UW-Fox (23-3) men’s basketball team helped make Head Coach Lee Rabas' birthday even happier on Sunday when they followed up their WCC-East regular season title by defeating UW-Manitowoc (20-7) 79-49 to claim the 2013 WCC Tournament championship. The Cyclones also won the tournament championship in 2011, and have won three straight WCC-East regular season titles.

The win was the 17th straight for UW-Fox after losing at UW-Manitowoc on December 10th 77-82.  The Blue Devils finished the regular season in second place in the WCC-East.  They earned a berth in the tournament championship game by beating UW-Marshfield, the WCC-West regular season champion, in a Saturday night semi-final.

Like the night before the Cyclones got off to a fast start on offense.  Jon Braeger and Trevor Krizenesky, who both earned all-tournament honors, each knocked down 2 three-point field goals to help push the Cyclones out to a 43-27 halftime lead.  UW-Fox shot 61% overall in the opening half, connected on 7 of their 12 three-point field goals, and made all 8 of their free-throws.

The Blue Devils cut the margin to 43-32 to open the second half, but Trevor Smith scored on back to back possessions to jump start the Cyclones.  A steal and lay-up by Jordan Kaufman, and a Jon Schlaver lay-in off a DJ Rhodes pass, pushed the lead to 55-37 with just under 13 minutes left to play.  The Blue Devils wouldn’t get any closer.

Rhodes scored 20 points to lead the Cyclones.  Besides scoring 14 points Braeger had 3 assists, 2 steals, and countless hustle plays for UW-Fox.  Trevor Smith closed out his Cyclone career by hitting all 5 of his field goal attempts for 11 points.  Krizenesky had 10 points to go with 7 assists and Schlaver 10 points to go with 6 rebounds.

The Cyclones had just 10 turnovers and shot 60% overall for the game.  Their defense held Blue Devil guard Tevin Taylor to just 12 points after he had scored 30 the night before.  They also forced 18 UW-Manitowoc turnovers.  UW-Fox finishes the season 23-3.

UW-Fox Earns Berth In Tournament Final

(Wausau) The UW-Fox men’s basketball team battled their way through a sluggish second half to post an 82-79 victory over UW-Barron in a WCC tournament semi-final game at UW-Marathon.  It was the Cyclones third victory over the Chargers this season, and like their game in Rice Lake two weeks ago, UW-Fox had to come from behind to earn the win.

Jon Braeger helped UW-Fox get off to a fast start.  His 2 three-point field goals helped the Cyclones jump out to a 14-4 lead.  However, UW-Barron would counter by shooting 47% from the floor, recording 5 blocked shots, and getting 10 first half points from Patrick Elza.  The Cyclones led at the half 41-33.

Thanks to strong offensive play, and the Cyclones cold shooting, UW-Barron tied the game at 41 on a jumper by Elza early in the second half.  UW-Fox went almost 7 minutes without a point coming out of halftime.  Jon Schlaver’s offensive rebound and lay-up gave the Cyclones a 43-41 lead with 13:04 left in the game.

From there the game would be a back and forth affair.  A rare 5 point play gave UW-Barron their first lead of the second half at 48-47.  With the Chargers leading 55-54, and under 7 minutes to play, Trevor Krizenesky knocked down a 3-point shot off a DJ Rhodes pass to give the Cyclones a 57-55 lead.  One they would not relinquish.

Schlaver would convert offensive rebounds into lay-ups on back to back possessions, and Sam Schreiber would set up Trevor Smith for yet another 3-point field goal from the deep left corner.  That shot gave the Cyclones a 71-63 lead with just over 2 minutes remaining.

UW-Barron would mount one last run.  The Chargers connected on 4 three-point field goals in the last minute of the game, but the Cyclones would make enough free-throws, including 2 by Rhodes with :08 seconds remaining, to hold on for the 82-79 win.

Krizenesky led UW-Fox with 17 points and pulled down 6 rebounds, while Braeger had 14 points to go with 4 assists.  Schlaver finished with 13 points and grabbed a team high 9 rebounds.  Rhodes and Smith rounded out the double digit scorers for UW-Fox with 13 and 10 points respectively.

The Cyclones will take a 22-3 overall record into Sunday’s WCC tournament championship game against UW-Manitowoc (20-6).  The Blue Devils, who finished the WCC-East regular season in second place, defeated UW-Marshfield 83-78 in the other semi-final game.  Tip-off is set for 2pm at UW-Marathon in Wausau.

It will be the third meeting between the two teams who each won home games against the other during the regular season.  The Blue Devils beat the Cyclones in Manitowoc 77-82, and UW-Fox returned the favor defeating UW-Manitowoc 86-45 in Menasha.

Game Day Preview

The UW-Fox (21-3) men's basketball team will meet UW-Barron (12-10) for the third time this season on Saturday night.  The two teams will meet in a WCC Tournament semi-final match up at UW-Marathon in Wausau at 8pm.  UW-Manitowoc (19-6) will take on UW-Marshfield (19-4) at 6pm in the other WCC tournament semi-final game.

In late December the Cyclones beat the Chargers at UW-Fox 82-62.  In the second half UW-Barron overcame a 16 point deficit to tie the game at 54-54 before Jon Braeger led a 28-8 UW-Fox run to close out the game.  The first year guard finished with 24 points, 16 in the second half.

The two teams squared off in Rice Lake two weeks ago when UW-Fox battled back from a 31-41 second half deficit to beat the Chargers 69-67.  Utilizing a unique line-up the Cyclones played no one over 6 feet tall over the final 8 minutes of the game.  Trevor Krizenesky and Trevor Smith combined to score 19 straight points to lead a 22-9 run that would put the Cyclones on top for good.  Krizenesky finished with a team high 15 points.

The Chargers are led by Riley Kannel (6-2, G), Ryan McDermott (6-7, F), Murdock Smith (6-2, G), and Garrett Verdegan (6-4, F).  UW-Barron went on the road to defeat UW-Marathon 75-69 on Wednesday night to advance to today's semi-final game.  They will have the advantage of having just played in Wausau three day's ago.

Saturday's winner will advance to the WCC tournament championship game scheduled for 2pm on Sunday February 24th at UW-Marathon.

UW-Fox Advances In WCC Tournament

(Menasha) The UW-Fox men's basketball team advanced to the WCC Tournament semi-finals with an 83-53 win over UW-Marinette on Wednesday night.  They will play UW-Barron on Saturday February 23 at 8pm.  That game will be played in Wausau, WI.  UW-Marathon is hosting the tournaments final four teams.

The Cyclones got off to a fast start against the Buccaneers thanks in part to their efficiency on offense.  They made 18 of their 33 first half field goal attempts, 5 of 13 from three-point range.  Jon Braeger scored 14 points, and Jordan Kaufman 11 points, in the opening half for UW-Fox.

In the second half UW-Fox pushed the lead to 58-27 thanks to strong defensive play from Kaufman, Trevor Krizenesky, and Trevor Smith.  Krizenesky converted several steals into lay-ups to help open up the lead.  UW-Marinette cut into the lead midway through the second half, but 4 points from Jon Schlaver helped UW-Fox comfortably push the lead back up over 20 points.

Braeger led UW-Fox with 24 points.  Krizenesky and Kaufman chipped in with 17 and 13 points respectively for the Cyclones.  Jon Schalver led UW-Fox with 9 rebounds.  The Cyclones overall record now stands at 21-3.

Cyclones Win Claim Title

(Fond du Lac) Sam Schreiber connected on back to back 3-point field goals to open the second half.  The quick 6 point burst pushed a 40-35 UW-Fox halftime edge into a double digit lead the Cyclones would maintain throughout the second half in posting an 87-69 WCC-East victory over UW-Fond du Lac in the Cyclones final regular season game.

The win earns UW-Fox their 3rd straight WCC-East championship in men's basketball.  They finish the regular season 20-3 overall, 10-2 in conference play.

The Cyclones shot a season best 65% from the field in the second half including 7 of 11 from three-point range.  For the game UW-Fox shot 58% overall.  Also key in the second half for UW-Fox was shoring up its defense, which held the Falcons to 37% shooting after halftime.

Trevor Krizenesky led UW-Fox with 22 points, 17 of those coming in the first half when the rest of the Cyclones struggled.  He also handed out 6 assists.  DJ Rhodes came up big in the second half and finished with 19 points.  Schreiber finished with 12 points and Jon Schlaver 10 to help lead the UW-Fox offense.

UW-Fox will have a bye in the first round of the WCC-East tournament.  They will host either UW-Sheboygan or UW-Marinette in a WCC Tournament quarterfinal game on Wednesday February 20th at 7pm.

UW-Fox Holds Off UW-Barron

(Rice Lake) Trevor Krizenesky scored 12 of his game high 15 points in the second half to lead UW-Fox to a 69-67 come from behind victory over UW-Barron on Saturday.  His runner along the baseline gave the Cyclones their first lead of the second half at 51-50.

UW-Fox made 7 of their 16 first half 3-point field goals, good for 44%.  However, 14 turnovers negated the shooting success and had the Cyclones down 29-35 at the half.

It was the Cyclones fourth game in 6 days, and it showed on the defensive end in the opening half.  UW-Fox lacked the tenacity and execution on defense that had marked their last 7 victories.

Down 31-41 UW-Fox guard Jon Braeger hit a 3-point basket to start a 22-9 Cyclone run.    Krizenesky and Trevor Smith would account for the next 19 UW-Fox points, with Krizenesky scoring 10 straight.

The Cyclones would build their lead to 68-60 and hold off a late UW-Barron rally.  The Chargers cut the lead to 2 with :03 seconds remaining on an offensive rebound put back, but the Cyclones safely inbounded and dribbled out the clock to seal the win.

Smith grabbed a team high 6 rebounds to go with 13 points.  Cameron Schaefer provided a big lift off the bench for UW-Fox with 12 points.  He and Jordan Kaufman also helped energize the Cyclone defense in the second half.  Braeger finished with 11 points and DJ Rhodes 10 for the visiting Cyclones.

UW-Fox (18-3, 8-2) returns home on Monday night for their final regular season home game, a 7:30pm tip-off against UW-Washington.  The UW-Fox Student Association will be sponsoring a $10,000 half-court shot at halftime.  The Cyclones will also honor 2nd year player Trevor Smith and his parents before the game.

Balance Helps Cyclones Earn Tough Road Win

(Sheboygan) The UW-Fox men's basketball team, with the help of Lamers Bus driver Leonard, the true star of the night, battled their way through the snow to UW-Sheboygan for a WCC-East match-up that was postponed due to weather on January 30th.  The Cyclones defeated the Wombats 83-53 for their 11th straight win.  It was the Cyclones third game in 4 days.

Balanced scoring and a tenacious defense have been a big part of the Cyclones recent success and that continued against the Wombats.  UW-Fox had eight players score between 7 and 11 points.  Jon Braeger and Jordan Kaufman led the way with 11 each.  Trevor Smith had 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists.  The Cyclones connected on 10 of 11 free-throw attempts, forced 27 Wombat turnovers, and pulled down 14 offensive rebounds.

UW-Fox Gets Key Victory

(Menasha) In a matchup of teams tied for first place in the WCC-East the UW-Fox men's basketball team avenged their December loss at UW-Manitowoc with an 86-45 victory on Wednesday night.  Jon Schlaver hit all 5 of his first half shots, and DJ Rhodes all 6 of his free-throws to help the Cyclones to a 45-22 halftime lead.  The Cyclone defense held UW-Manitowoc to 30% shooting in the first half and forced 13 Blue Devil turnovers.

In the second half UW-Fox guard Trevor Krizenesky converted 2 early steals into lay-ups to spark the Cyclones who would never look back.  The Cyclones shot 63.6% in the second half and held the Blue Devils to just 2/20 shooting from three-point range for the game.

UW-Fox only had 2 players score in double digits, and got 54 points from its bench in the win.  Schlaver led the Cyclones with 12 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, while Jon Braeger chipped in with 11 points.  Cameron Schaefer scored 9 points for the Cyclones, and Sam Schreiber led UW-Fox with 9 rebounds to go with his 8 points.  Jordan Kaufman recorded 9 deflections and 5 steals to help Krizenesky lead the Cyclone defense.

UW-Fox moves  to 16-3 overall, 7-2 in the WCC-East.  The Blue Devils fall to 15-6 (8-3).  UW-Fox will travel to UW-Sheboygan tomorrow night for a 7pm tip-off against the Wombats.  The game is a make up of last Wednesday's game, which was postponed because of weather.

The Cyclones were reminded that basketball is just a game on Wednesday and played with heavy hearts.  Trevor Krizenesky's Great Uncle passed away unexpectedly today while at work.  “Shorty”, as he was known, was a loyal fan and had been at all but one UW-Fox game this season.  Our thoughts, prayers, and deepest sympathy go out to the Krizenesky Family and the Brillion Community for their loss.

Cyclones Beat UW-Waukesha

(Menasha) Jon Schlaver and Jon Braeger led four Cylcones in double figures with 15 and 14 points respectively as the UW-Fox men’s basketball team played its best game of the year in defeating UW-Waukesha 63-44.  The Cyclones honored retiring UW-Waukesha head Coach Neal Nelson before the game.  Nelson has guided the Cougar program for 30 years and his 530-196 record earned him a spot in the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Hall-of-Fame this past October.

The Cyclones jumped out to a 33-24 halftime lead on the strength of their quickness and swarming defense, which forced 11 Cougar turnovers.  Schlaver scored 10 first half points and was the recipient of several Trevor Krizenesky assists, who himself had 7 first half points.

In the second half UW-Waukesha closed to within 50-42 on a 3-point basket by Brandon St. George, but the Cyclones responded with a 13-2 run to finish the game.  DJ Rhodes hit a 3-point field goal as the shot clock wound down and Jordan Kaufman hit a driving lay-up in transition to put the Cyclones up 56-42.
