The UW-Fox Valley men's basketball team ran their season record to 7-0 on Saturday with a 70-60 win over UW-Richland. Joe Dachelet (Menasha) filled in for the injured Cole Meyer (Bayport) in the Cyclone starting line-up and netted 20 points in his first collegiate start. He went 8-8 from the free-throw line and also pulled down 6 rebounds to help the Cyclone cause.
Second year player Karl Sachs (Seymour) scored 20 of his game high 23 points in the first half by hitting 6 three-point field goals. His torrid shooting got UW-Fox out to a 40-27 half time lead.
However, the Roadrunners closed the gap to 42-40 on a post up basket by Antonio Thomas with 15:11 left in the game. Jake Coenen (Kimberly), who turned in another defensive gem, answered with a three-point field goal on the next possession to push the lead back to 45-40. Isiah Mader's (Appleton East) three pointer with just under 8 minutes to go stretched the lead back to 60-47, and the Roadrunners would never get closer than 7 points the rest of the way.
UW-Fox was never able to put away the pesky Roadrunners who got 15 points from Derek Thomas and 10 from Bryan Trainor. UW-Richland also pulled down 20 second half offensive rebounds to keep themselves in the game.
Phil Landua (Kaukauna) continued to be a valuable contributor off the bench for the Cyclones. He scored 8 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, and handed out 4 assists on the day. Chris Searl (Appleton West) also contributed 9 rebounds and 6 assists for UW-Fox Valley.
With little time to rest, the UW-Fox men are back at it again on Monday night as they travel to Manitowoc for a WCC East showdown with the Blue Devils. The tip-off at UW-Manitowoc is slated for 7:00pm.
